Prestige and Luxury Car Buying

Buying from Auction

The buzz of the auction is unparalleled, the busy hustle and bustle, the anticipation, auction fever and a mecca to cars and car buying but it’s also a hazard for those that are unsure what they’re doing or what they’re looking for.

We regularly talk to customers who ask whether or not they should look to buy a car from an auction. They have seen the cars in a catalogue and believe it could be a route to a very cheap car and yes in principle you would enjoy a saving on a forecourt price or private sale however there are certain things you should be aware of.

You have to be careful what you bid on and buy you can’t test drive the car more often than not you can’t turn the engine on until you hear it pull into the auction area. You can’t get in the car either. All you can do is walk round it prior to the sale.

The trade accept this and are also experts in buying cars and looking for faults, spotting bad paint work and just hearing a mechanical problem.

You should consider using a car sourcing company just to cover this liability, there is no comebacks, no consumer credit act and most of all that few thousand pound saving can soon become a loss when you add replacement parts or panels on a luxury car.

Find a Luxury Car?

When it come to buying a luxury car there the most important thing to do is do your homework. This is critical, you are about to buy one of the most expensive items you own after your house and it is also your dream car and you don’t want any bitter realities to hit home.

Buying a prestige car needs time and plenty of questions, it’s got to be right or it could disappointing and costly. Our top tips would be:

  1. Inspect the car or have the car inspected thoroughly, mechanically and cosmetically. Take nothing to chance.
  2. Ensure the car has been MOT’d within 6 months and serviced by specialist dealers. Check the service agents out.
  3. Track ownership where you can, find out who had it and what it was used for as best you can.
  4. Contact the registering dealer to make sure they did register it.
  5. Carry out HPI clearance checks for finance interests, write off details and police alerts.

Apply these rules along with the normal rules of buying a car and you will be well on your way to having a great car prestige car on your drive way.

Find a BMW

Finding a used BMW can be a bit tricky to say the least. A mark of a reliable brand and a loved brand at that. We often meet people who are trying to find that all so special beloved BMW but it does have to be right.

From the obvious all important exterior and interior colours right through to the options, mileage and age and why not this is a luxury car brand and for the money you are likely to spend it has to be spot on.bmw-x5

It’s somewhat of a skill but it does work.

Audi – Prestige but without the Financial Burden

Audi continues to go from strength to strength. The cars better and the range continue to grow. Mondeo man wants to upgrade and BMW and Mercedes drivers alike have turned coat and opted for the "other" German marque.

Audi is no budget car range but the one place it really is trying to save you money is on your fuel and tax bills. Take the Audi A4, the 2.0 TDI engine gives over 54 miles to the gallon combined with a Co2 Emission of circa 134g/km.

This is all combined with stunning performance from a 143ps engine. How many cars can your truly say offer performance, economy, green thinking as well as a prestige badge. Not many!!

Audi also is subject to some of the strongest residual values in the market place. Which means with the average Audi being worth 10-20% more after three years. Owners enjoy strong change over figures and those who lease exceptional rates.

As an example based on a 3 Year 10000 miles per annum contract hire, The average BMW 3 Series driver will pay £350 plus VAT per month an A4 driver could pay £285 plus VAT. The average BMW 1 series driver would pay £275.00 plus VAT per month and the A3 driver would pay £210.00.

Jaguar: The Best of British?

It wasn’t that long ago that we were all up in arms when Jaguar was bought by the Ford Motor Company. One of the great British names in manufacturing owned by an American concern especially one synonymous with mass produced budget products. In 2008 we find that definitive British name now owned by emerging Manufacturer TATA which this time switches continents again and find itself in India.

Jaguar XFThis time however no one is up in arms and not only has one British classic in Jaguar gone but two as Land Rover has as well…..

So why isn’t there the uproar this time? Quite simply I think people now understand why Jaguar needs to be owned and operated by another organisation and what better than by a company from one of the worlds fast growing economies. The Indian TATA corporation is incredibly cash rich, has an enthusiasm to break into the West and could only do this by acquiring a household name. From Jaguars point of view this main a slight cultural shift but it does mean intense investment to aid development of the new products and existing products and in an ever changing market place which is more and more technology focuses especially on CO2 and Green Issues this is required. Jaguar represents something which is definitively British which we can all be proud and have a warm place in our hearts for. There is something nostalgic about the brand which you can never feel about the Audi’s and BMW’s of the world. Jaguar is an executive vehicle that’s reasonably priced and gives the perception of class, wealth and distinction and one way or another a Jaguar will always be noticed by the passer by.

Jaguar X TypeThe S-Type Replacement in the Jaguar XF is a stunning vehicle and already been incredibly popular and the classic X-Type offers a great entry point to the brand with it’s classy curves and attractive price tag at just over £20000 on-the-road.

The range also boasts a Sports Coupe, loved by Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson in the shape of the XKR and the X-Type comes in the highly spec’ d Sovereign Long Wheel Base which I know of a few major PLC Chief Executives who run these with their driver in tow.

So all in all, with the inception of the XF and the updated 2009 Model Year X-Type now here all combined with some enthusiastic investment from a new owner. Things really do look rosy for what will still be a British Designed, British Built and British Name.

Weak Pound makes for bargain cars for Europe…

With the British pound as weak as it is as the moment UK cars and vans make a seriously attractive propostion to our Euro wielding neighbours. Ok you need to be able to put up with a right hand drive car but the potential savings are massive. In the last 4 of 5 months alone interest from Southern Irish buyers has grown massively and in a difficult car sales market being able to buy a car either cheaper or at a price advantage is a major plus point for both private buyers and the trade.

In simple terms you can really feel the benefit in buying prestige product. The higher price tag means that the savings are greater in percentage terms particularly in the smaller EU countries. There has been a marked increase from the spanish islands and Malta to name but a few and especially Cyrus, who drive right hand drive cars are reaping the benefits.

2009 Porsche 911 updated with dual-clutch transmissions

Porsche has continued its tradition of only implementing minimal changes to the styling of its iconic 911 range for the current model’s midlife facelift, but at the same time engineers have introduced a wide range of new technologies to keep the car up to date and competitive as the world’s favourite luxury sports car.

Highlights of the update include all-new flat-six power units displacing 3.6 and 3.8-litres featuring direct-injection, and the option of the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dual-clutch transmission, both of which inprove performance and fuel economy.

At the moment the only models in the 911 range to receive the updates are the Carrera and Carrera S, both available in either coupe or cabriolet body styles. Updates for the other models, including the 911 Turbo, 911 GT3, and 911 GT3 RS , as well as the respective 911 Targa models, will come in the near future. [more]

More power, better fuel economy

With either a six-speed manual gearbox or the PDK transmission, the Carrera coupe offers improved fuel economy of 9.8L/100km and reduced emissions as well.
Maximum output of the 911 Carrera with its 3.6-litre power unit is up by 15kW to 254kW. Output on the 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-litre power unit is equally impressive, up by 23kW to 283kW. With this extra power, the Carrera S coupe now offers a top speed of slightly over 300km/h.

Standard on the Cayenne V8 engine range since 2007, Porsche is now moving over to direct-injection technology for the flat-six engines in the 911 series. Forming exactly the right mixture of fuel and air directly in the combustion chamber, this sophisticated technology serves to develop more horsepower and torque from less fuel as well as better throttle response.
Direct-injection also serves to ensure ‘homogeneous’ operation of the power unit with a consistent balance of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber at all times and under all running conditions. This guarantees optimum combustion, maintaining consistently low emissions, without worsening fuel consumption.

Seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox

The optional PDK dual-clutch gearboxes offers seven forward gears and features both fully automatic mode and full manual control via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. The new PDK replaces the previous Tiptronic S automatic.

PDK works like any other dual-clutch system and is similar to Volkswagen’s DSG or the gearboxes in the new Nissan GT-R and Mitsubishi Evolution X. It consists of a conventional manual gearbox and a hydraulic control system divided into two separate transmission units.

porsche_2008_facelift_560

Two wet clutches in radial arrangement, controlled hydraulically, and using oil for both cooling and lubrication, form the heart of the transmission. One clutch is for the first transmission unit with the uneven gear ratios (1,3,5,7) and reverse, and the other is for the second transmission unit with the even gears (2,4,6).
The big advantage is an even faster gearshift than a conventional manual gearbox or torque converter automatic transmission. The gears are already ‘in mesh’ when shifting and the power of the engine isn’t interrupted in the process.

Porsche was actually one of the first companies to develop dual-clutch technology, having introduced it in its race cars more than 25 years, but has taken longer than some rivals to bring it to market. Initial dual-clutch gearboxes had problems handling large amounts of torque.

The seven-speed PDK shifts gears up to 60% faster than a conventional automatic transmission, and leads to faster acceleration times. When equipped with PDK, the Carrera S coupe accelerates in 4.5 seconds from 0-100km/h – 0.2 seconds faster than with a manual six-speed gearbox and 0.8 seconds quicker than its predecessor with the Tiptronic S.
Better performance and interior options

Combined with the Sport Chrono Package Plus, now featuring launch control, the Carrera S accelerates in supercar territory, going from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
A host of safety features also make the cut including an updated Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system with Brake Pre-Filling and Brake Assistant functions for more powerful braking response when required. The 911 Carrera now also features larger 330mm diameter brake discs front and rear.

On the outside, the facelifted model is differentiated by its larger side mirrors, newly-designed 18-inch and 19-inch wheels and new lights featuring LED technology. Daytime driving lights and bi-xenon headlights are now standard on all new models in the Carrera range. Inside, there’s a simplified control panel with a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen display and inputs for an iPod or a USB stick.

Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid

BMW is back with another rendition of its ActiveHybrid system—this time in its flagship 7-series—with the world debut of the BMW Concept 7-series ActiveHybrid in October at the 2008 Paris auto show.

The automaker pairs the car’s twin-turbo, direction-injection, 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an electric drive for what is known as a mild hybrid—meaning the car cannot operate on electricity alone. Rather, the electric motors reduce fuel consumption and emissions—BMW claims by 15 percent—through such means as an automatic start-stop function that turns the vehicle off when it otherwise would be idling.

The idea is to make the car more efficient without compromising performance. The conventional version of the new 2009 7-series with the V-8 offers 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque and BMW says that is not diminished—in fact, the 20-hp electric motor will boost acceleration. Combining the two powertrains should produce about 415 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque, we are told. Channeling the power is an eight-speed automatic transmission. [more]

Energy captured in brake regeneration will be used to power many of the car’s features, leaving the fuel free to make the car go fast. BMW says enough energy can be stored to power substantially more electric components than in past vehicles—which seemingly makes it possible for an endless list of creature comforts. The energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries that are located in a trough in the trunk.

The components of the mild hybrid system come from a cooperative effort with Daimler. BMW first showed the fruits of these labors in the X5 Vision unveiled at the 2008 Geneva auto show. Mercedes introduced similar technology in Geneva with the Vision GLK BlueTec and S400 mild hybrid concepts.

Each luxury automaker insists its individual systems have been tweaked to reflect their brand images—a claim we’ll need to verify when we can drive their respective vehicles. A BMW source says the two automakers pooled their efforts for the first two steps of the development of the shared technology, at which point the work veered off in brand-specific directions. “Now we are at the fifth step of the technology,” he says. The source says BMW is using the technology to improve dynamics and performance, while Mercedes views the system as a means for better energy management—a claim Mercedes may or may not dispute.
